Surrey BC is home to many new to Canada residents. As part of creating a welcoming environment, the City of Surrey supported the development of a community garden specifically focused on creating community space for people new to Canada. With knowledge exchanges, celebrations, and even food sales occurring in the garden, the garden has become important social infrastructure in Surrey.
To share this success, the City of Surrey contracted Urban Food Strategies to develop a case study and tool kit for how to establish Welcoming Gardens in other jurisdictions. UFS interviewed key stakeholders including community members who spearheaded the welcome garden initiative and City Staff to create project deliverables.
